In Australia, a 58-yr-old man confessed to killing his prospective Irish son-in-law, saying, “Yes, your honour,” to support his guilty plea, reports The Mirror.
In a wheelchair Luke Simon, 58, of Jenolan Street, Oberon, appeared in Sydney Supreme Court via video connection from Silverwater prison.
Clad in prison greens, he acknowledged that on February 9, 2023, in a residence in Oberon, he had shot and killed Damien Conlon, the fiancé of his daughter Linda.
On June 12, Simon entered a first guilty plea at Bathurst Local Court.
The court was informed that Mr. Conlon, a resident of County Sligo, had been shot when police were summoned to the residence at approximately eight in the morning on Thursday, reports The Mirror.
At the scene, Simon was apprehended and brought to the Bathurst Police Station, where he was accused of murder and was denied bail.
The accused mentioned health concerns and requested to remain near his medical unit in the Sydney jail when asked whether he wanted a sentencing hearing in Bathurst.
Simon said to Justice H. Wilson, “I’m in a disabled cell, so that’s why I’m shaking my head, Your Honour.” Simon also had special medical requirements.
Judge Wilson scheduled a Sydney date for the punishment hearing and requested Simon to confirm his plea, reports The Mirror.
Justice Wilson stated, “It really comes down to whether there are locals who would be disadvantaged if he were sentenced in Sydney and would like to attend the sentence.”
Simon was officially found guilty, and the Sydney Supreme Court scheduled his next hearing for November 7, 2024.
When the judge deferred his case, Simon bowed and waved to the court.
Prior to leaving Sligo, Mr. Conlon, 38, worked in the hotel industry there. In Australia, he was employed in the building sector as a carpenter, reports The Mirror.
