It may be the other side of the world, but Australia is making news headlines this side of the equator for all the wrong reasons.
Aussie police are said to be acting extremely heavy-handed with protestors and even the general public by enforcing what many believe to be extreme draconian measures in their fight against covid.
Footage emerged on social media of police appearing to be very physical with women and even youths.
Australian police arrested 235 people in Melbourne and 32 in Sydney over the weekend in unauthorized rallies against lockdown with several protestors and police officers being injured in clashes with protesters.
Victoria Police said six officers had to be hospitalised with protestors also needing treatment.
About 700 people gathered in parts of Melbourne with 2,000 policemen turned the city centre into a virtual no-go area by setting up checkpoints and barricades. Local public transport and carpooling in the city have been cut off.
In Sydney, officers from the riot squad, highway patrol, detectives and general police were also on the streets to avoid large gatherings.
Australia has been battling an outbreak of the Delta variant of the corona virus since mid-June, with Sydney and Melbourne and the capital Canberra being strictly closed for weeks. 1,882 new cases of the coronavirus were reported on Saturday, the majority of them in Sydney.
