Australians have been officially warned by their government to avoid travel to the United States due to concerns of civil unrest and potential terror attacks as election day approaches.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) warned that there was a ‘potential to violence’ in the coming days and weeks according to News.au. The US has seen a spike in destructive protests in recent months, most recently in Philadelphia where thousands of rioters took part in looting and violence.

A recent study by Suffolk University published by USA Today indicates that 75% of Americans are worried about the risk of violence on election day. In 2016, only half the population had such concerns.

DFAT also advised Australians that there was currently a ‘heightened risk’ of terrorism in America as the country.
