Several US states deploy National Guard in anticipation of riots over election results

Several US states have activated their National Guard troops ahead of the Presidential elections are fears grow of potential civil unrest and violence.

According to the Army Times more than 3,000 troops active in 14 states with troops being posted in a perimeter around the White House to protect against potential riots and attacks on the home of the President and the first family.

The New York Times has reported that legal experts say the election may complicate the response, because the president has broad discretion to sidestep legal restrictions by declaring an insurrection, in the event of widespread rioting.

This would allow President Trump not only to take control of state National Guard troops, but also to deploy the Army or Marines.
