Austria is days away from imposing a lockdown for unvaccinated people only

Austria is said to be days away from banning millions of people who are not fully vaccinated against Covid-19, as daily infections hit an all-time high.

Intensive care units are increasingly under pressure, Federal Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg warned.

His conservative-led government announced that it would ban unvaccinated people from restaurants, theatres, ski lifts and providers such as hairdressers and beauty salons.

Around 65% of the Austrian population is fully vaccinated against the coronavirus, according to national statistics.

According to data from the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control, Austria has the lowest vaccination rate of all Western European countries except tiny Liechtenstein.
