Authorities arrest captain following Danube vessel collision as hopes of finding survivors fade

Authorities in Hungary, have confirmed that a Ukrainian man has been arrested after a tourist boat capsized on the River Danube.

It is understood the man’s arrest comes after 7 people were killed and 21 others have been reported missing following the incident which occurred on Wednesday night.

Officials say a 64-year-old captain has been arrested on suspicion of reckless misconduct in waterborne traffic leading to mass casualties.

The news comes as hopes of finding any of the 21 people who are reported missing alive have severely diminished.

Authorities say a criminal investigation has begun and that search operations are continuing, however due to strong currents caused by heavy rainfall search teams say the chance of finding any survivors are slim.

It is believed that the boat had as many as 35 people on board at the time of the crash with many of those being South Korean tourists.

Authorities say the age of tourists on board ranged from those aged in their 40s and 50s, although it is believed that a 6-year-old child and an elderly man aged in his 70s were on board the vessel at the time of the incident.
