Autumn is on the way and so are the house spiders – here’s a few pesticide free tips and tricks to keep them out of your home, including the dreaded ‘false widow’

The high temperatures last month and the approach of autumn is causing many spiders to seek refuge for the winter and your home provides the the ideal spider shelter.

Whilst most spiders in Ireland are harmless you still may not want to share your home with them.
Then there’s the NUI Galway research which highlights that the dangerous false widow spider can now be found throughout Ireland.

The false widow can give a nasty bite which can lead to hospitalisation.
Bite symptoms tremors, reduced or elevated blood pressure, nausea and impaired mobility.

Here are some recommendations by the Mirror to keep spiders under control without the use of dangerous pesticides.

Spiders don’t like strong smells so Peppermint oil is great when added to water and sprayed along skirting boards. A few drops added to water in a hand sprayer should do the trick. Even diluted vinegar can help.

Dried cinnamon sticks placed around the house can also help.

Moving plants that spiders can easily hide in away from the outside of your home can reduce the chances of spiders getting into your house in the first place and is probably the single most important action to take.

We’re not big fans of using any pesticides in the home. These chemicals are a hazard and use should be limited indoors. Using a light sprinkling ant powder along the exterior of your footpaths during a dry spell can have a very positive effect for spider control. Always follow manufacturers advice when using toxic pesticides!
