Nestlé is expanding its recent product recall in Ireland to cover an additional batch of its SMA First Infant Milk.
The extension of the recall relates to a contaminated raw ingredient, which was also linked to earlier recalls involving certain batches of infant formula and follow-on formula, reports Breaking News.
The ingredient involved, ARA oil produced in China, was contaminated with cereulide and was used in a base powder for manufacturing infant and follow-on formula. Cereulide is a toxin created by some strains of the bacterium *Bacillus cereus* and can cause food poisoning.
The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) is advising parents, guardians and caregivers who may have the affected products at home not to give them to infants or young children, reports Breaking News.
At present, there is no evidence that this incident has caused illness in Ireland.
The product and batch details included in the recall are as follows, reports Breaking News.
SMA First Infant Milk; pack size: 800g
Batch Code: 53390346AB, reports Breaking News.
Expiry Date: December 2027
If a child has consumed the product and is showing no symptoms, no further action is required. However, if a parent, guardian or caregiver has concerns about a child’s health, they are advised to contact a healthcare professional, reports Breaking News.
The FSAI said that cereulide toxin may already be present in food and is highly resistant to heat. Eating food containing the toxin can cause nausea and severe vomiting.
Symptoms may develop within five hours, reports Breaking News.
The illness typically lasts between six and 24 hours.
Nestlé is advising customers who purchased any of the affected batches to contact the company through its online form, providing a photograph of the product and the batch code, reports Breaking News.
