A hospital has apologized to the parents of a baby girl who was born “head first” on the floor, after claiming the mother was asked to get out of her hospital bed so the sheets could be changed, reports Breaking News.

Little Chelsea McDonagh, from Tuam, Galway, died five months later, the High Court heard.

The apology from Galway University Hospital was read as little Chelsea’s parents, Valerie and Michael McDonagh, settled a High Court claim for a nervous shock this week, while her grandfather also settled a claim on behalf of the family over her death.

McDonagh’s lawyer, Seun Leonowicz BL, instructed by Coleman Lawyers, told the court that “the baby hit the floor head first”, reports Breaking News.

The attorney said the mother told staff she felt something was coming.

It was claimed that due to the circumstances of the delivery, Chelsea’s daughter was born in a poor condition and required resuscitation.

As later claimed, a CT scan showed that the child had suffered a head injury that included brain swelling and bleeding in the brain.

A letter of apology from Galway University Hospital to the McDonagh family, which was read in court, said they wished to express their sincerest condolences on Chelsea’s tragic death.

A letter from the hospital general manager Chris Kane added: “The hospital acknowledges that there were a number of complex factors as identified by the external review which included shortcomings in the care received during Chelsea’s delivery and we sincerely apologise for them,” reports Breaking News.

It stated: “We deeply regret the impact and the great trauma and suffering that followed the serious injury suffered by her at the time of delivery. We understand that this statement cannot change or negate your loss, but wish hereby to convey our deepest sympathies to you and Chelsie’s extended family,” reports Breaking News.
