Barbaric female genital mutilation procedures are taking place in Ireland, gardai say




Gardaí believe that barbaric female genital mutilation (FGM) practices in Ireland are being carried out by practitioners who have flown into the country, reports The Mirror.

Police officials also fear that young women are being taken abroad for mutilation during school holidays.

Around 10,000 sufferers of painful amputations in Ireland, but charity AkiDwA estimates that many of them have had the procedure done before moving.

Detective Superintendent Ian Lackey from the Garda National Protective Services Bureau said: “They normally get people from the country of origin – so they either travel back to the country of origin for it to be performed or on certain occasions somebody may come over from the country of origin to perform it here.”
