Be careful out there – Motorists advised to drive with extreme caution this morning as black ice is widespread

Motorists have been advised to drive with extreme caution this morning as a hard frost fell last night leaving areas of black icy in many areas.

As predicted, temperatures plummeted to below 0c with areas in the West and North experiencing the first snowfalls of 2019, described as “wet snow” and sleet.

From 10pm onward last night, a hard frost is falling, especially on the west coast with temperatures dipping below freezing in many places.

Roads are said to be treacherous until mid morning with temperatures beginning to rise from lunchtime with sunshine forecast.

This week will be considerably colder than last week with daytime temperatures only rising to around 6c with nighttime temperatures going before zero.
