A girl was bitten on the arm by a bear when she placed it in the animal’s pen during a visit to the zoo.
The girl was visiting the zoo in Sulaymaniyah, in the Kurdistan region of northern Iraq, with her family on October 18.
She was taken to the city hospital for surgery.
The girl, whose name was not released, can be seen lying in a hospital bed with a bandaged arm and a bloody white shirt.
The zoo has been ordered to temporarily close following the incident while safety procedures are reviewed and an investigation is carried out.
The news comes after a girl died and her mother was fighting for her life after a rare giraffe attack in Durban, South Africa.
The incident occurred on Wednesday while the two were visiting Kuleni Game Park when they were suddenly attacked by the animal.
Both mother and daughter suffered catastrophic injuries from the attack.
The 25-year-old mother remains in critical condition in hospital after her one-year-old daughter died shortly after being rushed to hospital.
Police spokesman Lt Col Nqobile Gwala told News24: “he child was taken to the nearest doctor’s room, where she died. The mother was rushed to the hospital for medical attention. She is reported to be in a critical condition,” reports Metro.
The police investigate her death.
