Based on the ticket applications, the Republic of Ireland’s team will be one of the most supported at the UEFA Championship in France this summer. The host country, along with Austria, Poland and Switzerland complete the top five of nations with the most fans applying for tickets.
Ireland’s opening game against Switzerland on June 13th is the second most in-demand, topped only by Poland Vs. Germany on June 16th.
The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) said there is and “absolutely unprecedented” amount of Irish fans applying for tickets. However, since these are available through a ballot system, it means that many fans will be dissapointed when their applications fail.
Even though UEFA doesn’t allow to individual associations to reveal the number of ticket applications made from their countries, Ian Mallon, spokesman from the FAI commented that “there has never been an application volume like this”.
Although more tickets might be made available in the future, fans that have applied through the ballot system will know if they were succesful on February 29th.
