From July 1, a new “pay by weight” system will be rolled out nationwide, effectively banning waste management companies from charging flat annual fees.
However, some have raised fears that this new system may lead to increased charges.
The reasoning behind the scheme is that people who waste more, will pay more, and those who recycle more or waste less, will pay less.
About 1.2m people are currently subscribed to a household waste management scheme, and it is expected that about 1m will pay less from July 1.
