Bishop Edward Daly has passed away at the age of 82.
He was the man filmed waving a bloody handkerchief in front of a group of people carrying the mortally wounded body of 16-year-old Jackie Duddy on Bloody Sunday, in 1972.
On that fateful day, British paratroopers opened fire in Derry, killing 13 people and injuring fourteen. One of the wounded later died.
Mr. Daly served as Bishop of Derry from 1974 until 1993, and as chaplain at the Foyle Hospice in his later years.
He was awarded the Freedom of the City by Derry City Council last year.
Mr. Daly passed away peacefully earlier today.
