Eamon Ryan, the minister of transport, has threatened to withhold funds from Dublin City Council should it postpone carrying out its transport plan, reports RTE.
This is so because the transportation plan is financed by the Department of Transportation’s Pathfinder initiative, which lowers greenhouse gas emissions through various projects.
The Dublin plan’s initial phase, which restricts the number of automobiles that may travel through the city, was scheduled to launch the following month.
But as companies in the capital warned of a large financial effect, it was shelved, reports RTE.
Any delay, in Mr Ryan’s opinion, would “not be clever,” since it would indicate that the council is not genuinely committed to sustainable mobility.
The minister stated the funds were designated for traffic signalling and traffic management initiatives, but he would not disclose the exact amount of funding the council stood to lose.
He clarified, though, that the goal was to implement a strategy that would revitalise the city core, not only to make money, reports RTE.
