The hunt for two swimmers who went missing off Silverstrand in Bearna, County Galway, has turned up a corpse, reports RTE.

The corpse, believed to be that of a man in his 70s, was found shortly before 2:00 pm and transported to Galway docks, according to Gardaí.

Additionally, a search is underway for a lady in her 30s who is a swimmer.

Following the two individuals’ disappearance at sea in Galway Bay, the search was launched, reports RTE.

After failing to return from a swim this morning at Silverstrand beach, which is located on the outskirts of the city, the 74-year-old man was reported missing.

Around 10.30 a.m., emergency personnel were sent to the area.

Later, it was discovered that the woman in her 30s, who was also a swimmer, had gone missing, reports RTE.

After she failed to show up for work as scheduled, the alarm was raised over her whereabouts at approximately 1pm.

Local volunteers and RNLI crews are helping the Coast Guard service and the Gardaí.

Additionally present on the site is the Coast Guard’s Cleggan Unit, which is “assessing conditions for a drone search,” reports RTE.

Heavy fog is making it difficult to see, which is impeding the search.

While the search is ongoing, the public has been prohibited from entering Silverstand, reports RTE.

Situated between Salthill and Bearna, the beach is a well-liked attraction that draws plenty of swimmers every day.

Both swimmers are known to be from County Galway, reports RTE.
