If elected to power, Sinn Féin has promised to provide free prescription drugs to every home, reports Breaking News.
In an effort to end the use of hospital trolleys entirely, the party is promising to provide 5,000 hospital beds.
In a comprehensive proposal that would cost more than €4 billion more than is presently spent on health care, it also promises the biggest extension of the medical card program in history, reports Breaking News.
To address the nationwide shortfall, the plan also calls for the State to directly hire hundreds of general practitioners. During its first 100 days in government, it pledges to make progress on the public GP contract.
David Cullinane, a health spokesperson for Sinn Féin, stated that the funds must be used.
Mr Cullinane told Newstalk: “We went from having a trolley crisis that was a winter trolley crisis, to an all-year round trolley crisis. We’ve had promises that were made to children with scoliosis and spina bifida that were not met. We have children with disabilities who can’t access assessments of need or basic services. Our plan is an additional €3.6 billion in the Department of Health over five years. That’s necessary if you want to put the beds in the system, if you want to hire the staff that we need,” reports Breaking News.
