Boy recovering in hospital after being ‘seriously wounded’ in Zurich attack

One youngster was critically hurt and two others were hurt in a stabbing assault on children outside a creche in Zurich on Tuesday, according to police, who also apprehended a Chinese national, reports RTE.

Paramedics attended to the three youngsters injured in the attack and transported them to a hospital.

The assault took place at lunchtime on Berninastrasse, a mostly residential street in the northern area of Switzerland’s largest city, the Oerlikon.

“According to initial findings, a daycare worker was on her way to a daycare centre with several children when a man suddenly attacked the children with a blade,” Zurich police said in a statement, reports RTE.

“The daycare worker reacted immediately and overpowered the attacker with the help of a man and held the suspected perpetrator until the emergency services arrived,” reports RTE.

A 23-year-old Chinese male was detained and brought to a police station, according to the police.

The statement stated that emergency personnel “provided first aid” to one critically injured youngster and two moderately injured boys, both of whom were five years old, “and then taken to hospital,” reports RTE.

Police psychologists and a care team were sent in to tend to the affected parties, while forensic experts were summoned in to conduct more enquiries.

According to police spokesperson Pascal Siegenthaler, no further persons were hurt.
