A 25-yr-old man appeared before Cork District Court on Wednesday charged with the murder of his 59-yr-old mother and the assault causing harm to his 63-yr-old father, reports RTE.
David Gallagher, of Shrewsbury Downs, Ballinlough, Cork, was remanded in custody following a brief hearing.
RTE reports that the charges relate to an incident at the family home in Shrewsbury Downs on the evening of Monday. Stella Gallagher suffered fatal stab wounds while attempting to flee the property. She was rushed to Cork University Hospital but was pronounced dead shortly before midnight.
Her husband, Brian Gallagher, sustained serious injuries in the attack and remains in hospital.
Gardaà launched a murder investigation, with forensic experts examining the scene, door-to-door inquiries conducted, and a nearby green area searched.
Detective Sergeant Niall Hayes told the court he arrested and charged Mr Gallagher, who made no reply to either charge, reports RTE.
Solicitor Shane Collins-Daly consented to the remand in custody and requested urgent medical and psychiatric assessment for his client while in prison—a request granted by Judge John King.
Mr Gallagher is due to appear again via video link on November 26.
