A man has been charged with the murder of prominent Donegal businessman Stephen McCahill.

Mr McCahill, a married father of two in his 60s, was found dead following an assault at his home outside Ard an Rátha in the early hours of Monday, 5 January 2026.

The deceased was a well-known auctioneer, publican, and community figure who owned the Corner House pub. He was named Donegal Person of the Year in 2016 and had stood as an Independent candidate in the Donegal South West constituency in the 2011 General Election. Tributes have highlighted his central role in community life, with locals describing him as the glue holding the area together.

Michael Maloney, 32, from Loughross Point in Ard an Rátha, was arrested and charged with the murder on Tuesday, 6 January. He appeared before Letterkenny District Court, where he made no reply to the charge. His solicitor requested medical and psychiatric treatment for a diagnosed condition. He was remanded in custody to Castlerea Prison and is due to appear again via video link next week, reports RTE.

The community remains in shock, with flowers left at the family pub and tributes from figures including TD Pat ‘the Cope’ Gallagher and singer Imelda May.
