The 31-yr-old is understood to have made his way back to his apartment in Camden Court on Carroll’s Quay after being stabbed in the Shandon Street area of the city at around 7.30pm.
Emergency services were called to the property, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene by a local GP.
The apartment has been sealed off for a technical examination and the man’s body remains inside.
The Office of the State Pathologist has been notified and a post-mortem examination will determine the direction of the Garda investigation into the death.
