BREAKING: Absolute heartbreak as Ireland lose 4-3 on penalties in Prague

Republic of Ireland suffered a heartbreaking exit from the 2026 World Cup qualifiers after losing to Czechia in a dramatic penalty shootout on Thursday night in Prague.

In the UEFA playoff semi-final at Fortuna Arena, Ireland took a shock early lead through Troy Parrott’s 19th-minute penalty and an own goal by Czech goalkeeper Matěj Kovář four minutes later. Patrik Schick pulled one back from the spot before Ladislav Krejčí’s 86th-minute equalizer forced extra time.

Despite a valiant defensive effort and surviving several scares, including a VAR reprieve, the Boys in Green could not find a winner. The match went to penalties, where Czechia held their nerve to triumph 4-3, sending Ireland home empty-handed.

Manager Heimir Hallgrímsson’s side produced moments of real quality but were undone by late fatigue and clinical Czech finishing from 12 yards. It ends Ireland’s campaign just one step short of a potential return to the World Cup finals for the first time since 2002.

Fans will reflect on what might have been after a resilient performance on the road. Attention now turns to rebuilding for future competitions.
