There is mayhem on Spain’s high-speed rail network on this evening as two trains derailed near Adamuz in Córdoba province, claiming at least five lives.

An Iryo service from Málaga to Madrid-Puerta de Atocha derailed around 7:39pm local time, invading the adjacent track. This caused a collision and subsequent derailment of an oncoming Renfe Alvia train heading from Madrid to Huelva.

Emergency services, including multiple mobile ICUs and fire crews, rushed to the scene to rescue trapped passengers and treat the injured—reports indicate dozens hurt, with some in critical condition. All high-speed services between Madrid and Andalucía have been suspended.

The causes remain under investigation, with Transport Minister Óscar Puente monitoring developments closely. This marks one of the most serious incidents on Spain’s modern AVE lines in recent years.
