Retired Providence Municipal Court Chief Judge Frank Caprio, widely known as “America’s nicest judge,” passed away peacefully at the age of 88 on Wednesday, following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. His family confirmed the news in a heartfelt statement posted on his official social media pages.

Caprio, who served as a judge from 1985 until his retirement in 2023, gained international fame through his Emmy-nominated show *Caught in Providence*, where his compassionate and humorous approach to justice touched millions. Viral clips of his courtroom rulings, often showing empathy by reducing fines or dismissing tickets for those in hardship, amassed billions of views on platforms like YouTube and TikTok.

Diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in November 2023, Caprio shared his journey with his 3.2 million social media followers, asking for prayers in a final video posted from his hospital bed just hours before his passing. “His warmth, humor, and kindness left an indelible mark on all who knew him,” the family’s statement read, urging others to carry forward his legacy of compassion.

Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee ordered state flags to fly at half-staff until Caprio’s burial, calling him a “Rhode Island treasure.” Caprio is survived by his wife, Joyce, five children, seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. His memoir, Compassion in the Court, published in February 2025, remains a testament to his life’s work of blending justice with humanity.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Filomena Fund, established by Caprio to support those in need.
