TV and Radio host Chris Evans has announced he has quit presenting BBC motoring show Top Gear.

The first series with Evans at the helm has ended with audiences at an all-time low, and continuing to nose dive weekly.

“Stepping down from Top Gear,” he said on Twitter. “Gave it my best shot but sometimes that’s not enough. The team are beyond brilliant, I wish them all the best.”

Evans and former Friends star Matt LeBlanc took over the show this year after Jeremy Clarkson was sacked for allegedly punching  a BBC producer. His pals Richard Hammond and James May left along with him and are “gearing” up to start their new show on Amazon TV shortly.

The first show of Evan’s series launched with 4.4 million viewers in May, but subsequently dropped to 1.9 million for the last episode.
