Former UFC champion Conor McGregor has officially declared his intention to run for President of Ireland in the upcoming election. The announcement, made via a fiery post on X, has sent shockwaves through both political and sports communities.

McGregor, 37, known for his brash persona and global fame as a mixed martial artist, stated he aims to “bring a new era of strength and prosperity” to Ireland. In his post, he emphasized his desire to represent the Irish people, promising transparency, economic growth, and a focus on national pride. “I’ve conquered the cage, now it’s time to lead the nation,” McGregor wrote.

The Dublin native, who has no prior political experience, is leveraging his massive following and business acumen to fuel his campaign. While some praise his boldness, critics question his qualifications for the largely ceremonial role, which requires a candidate to be at least 35 and nominated by either 20 members of the Oireachtas or four local authorities.

Political analysts note McGregor’s announcement could disrupt the race, drawing attention to issues like youth engagement and economic inequality. However, his controversial past, including legal issues, may polarize voters.

McGregor has not yet detailed his platform but promised a formal campaign launch soon. The Irish presidential election is expected later this year, with current President Michael D. Higgins’ term ending in November 2025.

He needs as many signatures as possible here.
