A little girl tragically lost her life while trying to protect her mother from a late-night knife attack in Wexford. 8-yr-old Malikika Al Katib is believed to have rushed downstairs upon realising that her mother was being attacked with a knife in their home on William Street in New Ross, County Wexford, late on Sunday night. Sources told The Irish Mirror that Malikika intervened to help her mother during the attack.
Unfortunately, the assailant then turned the knife on her and stabbed her at least twice. A source stated, “She realized her mum was being attacked and went to try to help her as best as a young child can.” Malikika, whose mother Alisha is an Irish-born convert to Islam, sustained serious injuries in the incident. Paramedics attempted to save her at the scene, but she was later rushed to University Hospital Waterford, where she lost her battle for life early on Monday morning. Alisha, 31, was also stabbed during the incident and was receiving treatment for her injuries at the same hospital as of Monday night. It has been reported that she is expected to make a full recovery. A man in his 30s was also found at the scene with minor knife injuries and is being treated at University Hospital Waterford.
Members of the Garda Armed Support Unit were guarding this man as a suspect on Monday night, reports the Mirror.
Detectives are expected to question him as early as Tuesday. Gardaí have stated that they are not searching for any additional suspects in connection to the incident, which has shocked the community in County Wexford. It is understood that the suspect is from the Middle East but has been living in New Ross for several years. Members of the Garda Public Order Unit were also present at the hospital on Monday night.
