Significant taxi fare increases have come into effect

A rise in taxi fares is set to take effect.

The National Transport Authority has introduced a nine percent increase in taxi fares to account for the escalating costs of operating a taxi.

From 2022 to 2024, the expenses associated with running a taxi have surged by approximately nine to eleven percent.

Currently, a “special rate” applies to taxi fares for rides taken from 8pm on Christmas Eve to 8am on St. Stephen’s Day, and from 8pm on New Year’s Eve to 8am on New Year’s Day, reports Breaking News.

The NTA announced that this special rate will now be extended to include the peak weekend hours, specifically from 12 midnight to 4:00am, on Friday nights into Saturday mornings and Saturday nights into Sunday mornings, all year round, to encourage more drivers to cater to the nighttime economy.

The charge for pre-booking a taxi will rise from €2 to €3, reports Breaking News.

FREENOW Ireland’s general manager, Danny O’Gorman, stated that the fare increase is essential to ensure that current drivers can continue to operate their taxis and that the sector remains appealing to new drivers.

“The new maximum taxi fare, set by the National Transport Authority, is weighted towards late-night weekend hours to better supply taxis at times of peak demand while supporting the night-time economy,” he said, reports Breaking News.
