BREAKING: ‘Disaster for Martin’ – Fianna Fail’s Jim Gavin was asked five times about dispute with tenant, review finds

According to the party’s internal review into its 2025 presidential election campaign, former Dublin GAA manager Jim Gavin—selected as Fianna Fáil’s candidate—was questioned five times about a potential dispute with a former tenant, including on two occasions prior to his nomination. Gavin consistently stated that he had no recollection of any such issue.

According to RTE, Gavin did not contribute to the report’s preparation and declined to be interviewed for it.

The inquiries originated from journalist Fionnán Sheahan:
– A phone call on 5 September to Deirdre Gillane, Chief of Staff to the Taoiseach.
– An email on 8 September to the Fianna Fáil press office.

Following these queries, Mr Gavin maintained that he recalled no problems with any tenants. He was formally selected as the party’s candidate on 9 September.

This position held until the afternoon of Saturday, 4 October, when the tenant contacted campaign communications staff member Elaine O’Meara during a phone call in Gavin’s presence. Gavin subsequently reviewed his records further, reports RTE.

The review estimates the campaign’s total cost at €350,000 to €400,000. Since Gavin’s vote share fell below the reimbursement threshold, the party cannot recover certain expenses.

Gavin’s name first emerged as a potential candidate in the week of 9 June, when former Dublin footballer Keith Barr recommended him to Minister for Public Expenditure Jack Chambers. This was followed by a text message from Mr Gavin to Mr Chambers on 15 June to pursue the matter.

Due diligence on the candidate was conducted by General Secretary Seán Dorgan, advisor Peter Dorgan, and Assistant General Secretary Darragh McShea.

Martin remains under major pressure and may lose both positions of Taoiseach and Fianna Fail leader as a result of the atrocious campaign disaster.
