BREAKING: Four people have been died after a cable car crashed in Naples

A cable car crash at Monte Faito near Naples killed at least four people and injured one today, just a week after the tourist attraction reopened. The accident, caused by a snapped cable, sent the cabin plummeting at around 3 p.m., triggering a major rescue operation.

The incident stranded 16 passengers in a second cabin mid-air, who were evacuated using harnesses amid fog and high winds. One person remains missing, with the injured victim airlifted in critical condition. The cable car, linking Castellammare di Stabia to Monte Faito, is popular for its views of Mount Vesuvius.

Umberto De Gregorio, head of the EAV transport company, described the event to RTÉ as a devastating tragedy, noting the cabin’s catastrophic fall. Vincenzo De Luca, Campania’s regional leader, told RTÉ that rescue efforts faced severe weather challenges, complicating aid to victims, including tourists.

Italy’s alpine rescue team continues to investigate, with authorities probing the cable failure. The crash has stunned the region, casting a shadow over the newly reopened route as tributes pour in for the victims.
