BREAKING: Gardai announce a woman in her 60s has died in a house fire

A tragic incident unfolded in Limerick city on Saturday evening, when a woman in her 60s lost her life in a house fire at a residence in Chesterfield Downs, Singland.

Emergency services were alerted to the blaze shortly before 5:30pm, with some reports indicating the initial call came in around 5:22pm from a member of the public. Firefighters from Limerick City and County Fire and Rescue Service responded rapidly—arriving within minutes in some accounts—but found the fire well established upon arrival.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported, and there were no indications of additional occupants requiring rescue or medical attention. Her body remains at the property, which has been preserved as a scene for technical examination by Gardaí.

Gardaí have launched an investigation into the fatal house fire. A formal statement confirmed: “Gardaí are investigating a fatal house fire that occurred on Saturday evening, 17th January 2026 in Singland, Limerick city”, reports RTE.

They added that the outcome of a post-mortem examination will determine the next steps and course of their inquiry. At this early stage, no cause of the fire has been publicly disclosed, and there is no suggestion of foul play or suspicious circumstances based on available information.

The property in the Singland area suffered significant damage, with descriptions in several outlets indicating the home was devastated or completely destroyed by the flames.

This incident comes amid a period of notable house fires in the Limerick region, including a separate blaze earlier in January that saw heroic actions by grandparents rescuing a young grandchild—though that event was non-fatal and unrelated.

Our thoughts are with the family, friends, and community affected by this heartbreaking loss. Authorities continue their work to establish the full circumstances, and any updates will likely follow the post-mortem process and further scene examination.
