Enoch Burke has been arrested and taken to Mountjoy Prison following a High Court order issued last week that committed him for contempt of court.
In his judgment, Mr Justice Brian Cregan described Mr Burke and his family’s actions as the most deliberate, sustained, and concerted attack on the authority of the civil courts and the rule of law in Ireland in recent times.
The judge noted that Mr Burke had been permanently barred by court order from trespassing on the premises of Wilson’s Hospital School, an injunction he has refused to obey for the past three years. Finding no alternative, the court ordered his imprisonment once again.
Mr Burke has now spent more than 500 days in jail for contempt across three separate periods since September 2022.
He had resumed attending the school grounds daily when the new term began after the summer holidays.
In the days after the latest committal order was made, gardaí called to his family home in Castlebar, Co Mayo, on several occasions but left each time without locating him.
Mr Burke has not been observed at the school since the order was issued, although it is understood he made a brief appearance on Friday to record a video outside the grounds.
Today, however, he returned to the school, prompting a call to gardaí who subsequently arrested him.
