The HSE apologised to and compensated a 13-yr-old girl who received the wrong Covid-19 vaccine and was injected with a previously used needle.
Accroding to RTE, barrister James Cross informed Judge Fiona O’Sullivan in the Circuit Civil Court that Ella Mockler Mulhern, now nearly 18, suffered significantly due to the HSE’s negligence and breach of duty. Cross, representing Ella with James McSweeney Solicitors, Tallaght, stated that in August 2021 at the Citywest Hotel vaccination centre in Dublin, HSE staff administered the wrong vaccine using a needle previously used on one of three other individuals.
Ella’s father, Niall Mulhern of Beech Park, Lucan, Co Dublin, provided written evidence that the second vaccination was given without discussion or consent from either himself or his daughter, reports RTE. He noted that the nurse initially denied reusing the syringe, but an investigation by the Clinical Lead Nurse confirmed it had been used on another person, though they could not identify which of three individuals.
Cross added that Ella underwent blood tests, received a Hepatitis B vaccination, and completed a month-long post-exposure antiretroviral therapy course because at least one of the three potential prior recipients refused blood testing.
