US President Joe Biden has officially pardoned his son, Hunter, who is facing sentencing in two criminal cases, despite previously assuring the public that he would not intervene in his son’s legal matters.
“No reasonable person who looks at the facts of Hunter’s cases can reach any conclusion other than that Hunter was targeted simply because he is my son—and that is wrong,” the president stated, calling the situation “a miscarriage of justice.”, reports RTE.
This decision is likely to raise new questions about the independence of the US judicial system, especially as former President Donald Trump has begun appointing loyalists to key positions in the FBI and Justice Department.
Earlier this year, Hunter Biden was convicted of lying about his drug use when purchasing a gun, an offense classified as a felony. He has also pleaded guilty in a separate tax evasion case but has not yet faced sentencing. President Biden had previously stated he would not pardon his son.
“I said I would not interfere with the Justice Department’s decision-making, and I kept my word, even as I watched my son being selectively and unfairly prosecuted,” President Biden explained in his statement on Sunday. “The charges against him were instigated by several of my political opponents in Congress who aimed to attack me and undermine my election.”, reports RTE.
“I believe in the justice system, but as I’ve grappled with this situation, I also believe that raw politics have tainted this process, leading to a miscarriage of justice,” he added.
Meanwhile, criminal cases against President-elect Trump have stalled following a sweeping ruling on presidential immunity by the Supreme Court, which significantly reduces the likelihood that Trump will face jail time, even after his landmark conviction for falsifying business records in May.
