In a career-defining moment, Ireland’s Kate O’Connor clinched a stunning silver medal in the women’s heptathlon at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, etching her name into Irish sporting lore as the sixth athlete to medal at the event in its 42-year history.

The 24-year-old from Dundalk entered the second day in silver position after a blistering Day 1, where she smashed three personal bests: 13.44 seconds in the 100m hurdles, 1.86m in the high jump, and 24.07s in the 200m. Trailing American Anna Hall, O’Connor faced a setback with a knee injury during the long jump, dropping to fourth temporarily. Undeterred, she unleashed her strongest throw ever—a javelin PB of 53.06m, the day’s best—before battling through the final long jump and 800m.

Hall claimed gold with 6,888 points, but O’Connor’s grit secured silver at a national record 6,714, edging out Britain’s Katarina Johnson-Thompson. “This is madness—I’m so proud,” O’Connor beamed post-race, knee strapped but spirit unbroken.

Capping a dream 2025—bronze at European Indoors, silver at World Indoors, and gold at World University Games—O’Connor’s triumph inspires a new generation in multi-events. From Commonwealth silver in 2022 to world podium, her journey proves resilience conquers all.
