In a pivotal move for Ireland’s upcoming presidential election, Sinn Féin has thrown its weight behind Independent candidate Catherine Connolly, announcing the decision today following an ardchomhairle meeting. The endorsement, revealed by party leader Mary Lou McDonald, unites the left-wing bloc and positions Connolly as a formidable challenger to establishment favorites.
Connolly, the Galway West TD and former Leas Cheann Comhairle, has long championed progressive causes, from social justice to Irish reunification. “In my lifetime sounds very good. In my term as president sounds even better,” she quipped recently, underscoring her commitment to a border poll. Already supported by the Social Democrats, Labour, People Before Profit, Solidarity, the Green Party, and independents, Sinn Féin’s backing amplifies her inclusive appeal across the Dáil.
McDonald praised Connolly’s ability to “listen to people that she doesn’t agree with,” signaling a strategic pivot away from fielding its own candidate. This coalition-building echoes calls from Sinn Féin TDs for long-term left alliances, countering a unified right-wing opposition.
Critics, including Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil, decry the move as partisan, but supporters hail it as a democratic refresh. With nominations closing soon, Connolly’s campaign gains momentum, promising a presidency that bridges divides and eyes unity.
