In an unprecedented broadcast to the nation, the caretaker Taoiseach Leo Varadkar addressed the nation saying that we are in the calm before the storm and things are going to get bad.
Varadkar did not say any new measures were to be implemented but said that the HSE believe we will see 15,000 cases by the end of March and many more going forward.
He said that people are going to die and it’s going to get very bad but people need to come together.
The Taoiseach said:
“We need your co-operation and working together to get through this. Shopping online, getting things delivered.
We’re asking people to come together as a nation by staying away from each other. Covering your mouth from coughing and sneezing is still the best thing.
The elderly and people will an illness will need to stay at home for a number of weeks. We call it cacooning.”
Speaking to the young people, Varadkar said:
“Young people, you are going to have to wait a while longer for that. I’m asking you to ask your parents at least once a day to ask them to help them. Keep up your school work.”
He went on to say:
“We can’t stop the virus but we slow it and flatten the curve.
Only if everyone takes the same act – we all need to take steps. In our homes, places of leisure and places of work.
We’ve asked people to stop parties, weddings and other occasions. These choices aren’t easy but they’re necessary.
We’ll take advice from the chief medical team and check public medical officer.”
