A man aged in his 80s has been arrested by gardai after a man in his 60s was shot dead in Ballyhaunis, Co Mayo shortly before midnight.
Gardai say that the dead man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The elderly man is being held and questioned at Castlebar garda station.
A forensic examination is to be carried out today at the scene at Arghamore.
Gardai have appealed for witnesses to contact them on the Confidential Line 1800-66-61-11.
