The people of Oughterard, who have been told by the Minister for Justice Charlie Flanagan to “step back” from their opposition to a potential migrant plantation in their small, rural town, continue to refuse to back down.

Then on Tuesday morning it was reported that one of those local Irish citizens was hospitalised after “colliding with a vehicle” near the building site at the Connemara Hotel where it is anticipated a Direct Provision centre will be set up.

It was reported that the vehicle was a van owned by a security company hired to protect the hotel but it hasn’t been confirmed.

The community, which was deprived of its own local Garda station in 2011 by then Fine Gael Justice Minister Alan Shatner, has overwhelming expressed its opposition to the potential migrant plantation.
