The national forecaster Met Eireann has issued a status red weather warning for Galway and Clare as storm Jorge approaches the western seaboard.
The warning comes as gusts from Storm Jorge reaching 145km/h are set to batter the west coast
Met Eireann say the warning is valid from 1pm until 4pm on Saturday.
Meanwhile a status Orange alert has been issued for the rest of the country with strong winds and localised flooding expected overnight.
People are advised to stay well clear of coastal areas, be very vigilant if out walking or driving on motorways with crosswinds and to not go anywhere near the water.
