The national forecaster has issued a Status Orange thunder and lightning warning as very heavy rainfall is forecast.
According to Met Eireann, thunderstorms are already affecting counties Cavan, Leitrim, Longford and Roscommon but that heavy rain could be seen in neighbouring counties.
The warning remains in place until at least 6pm this evening with a review taking place at that time,
People are advised to be extremely careful on roads in these counties as there will be torrential rain in some places, which might lead to localised flooding.
