BREAKING: Met Éireann Issues Storm Amy Alert – 80 km/h gusts to slam Ireland hard

Met Éireann has declared a nationwide weather alert as Storm Amy makes landfall from 2pm, bringing strong winds and heavy rain across Ireland. The storm, originating in the mid-Atlantic, is forecast to deliver gusts reaching 80 km/h, with sustained winds up to 50 km/h in exposed areas, according to the national forecaster’s latest bulletin.

The alert covers the entire island, with the most severe impacts expected along the west coast and in urban centers like Dublin and Cork. Heavy rain bands, totaling up to 2.2 mm in short bursts, will sweep in from midday, raising risks of localized flooding on roads and low-lying areas. Temperatures will hover around 8-18°C, but wind chill could drop the “feels like” factor to as low as 6°C, exacerbating discomfort for commuters and outdoor workers.

Met Éireann advises residents to secure outdoor items, avoid coastal walks, and prepare for potential power disruptions similar to those seen in recent Atlantic systems. No widespread travel cancellations are reported yet, but ferry operators and airlines urge checking updates. The storm is expected to ease by evening, with lighter showers persisting into October 4.

This follows a pattern of unsettled autumn weather, with Amy marking the season’s first named system. Officials emphasize vigilance to mitigate risks.
