Storm Amy, the first named storm of the season, is battering the island of Ireland with severe winds and heavy rain, prompting widespread disruptions. In Northern Ireland, schools across a large part of the region have been ordered to close early as damaging gusts of up to 80mph (130km/h) threaten safety, fallen trees, and power outages.

An Amber wind warning covers western counties including Antrim, Derry/Londonderry, Tyrone, and Fermanagh from 3pm Friday until 8pm, while a Yellow warning affects the entire North until midday Saturday. Authorities urge residents to avoid travel and stay indoors. In the Republic, Met Éireann has issued Status Orange wind warnings for Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, and Sligo, with nationwide Yellow alerts escalating to severe conditions.

Additional upgrades loom for the south and northwest, including Orange rain warnings for Kerry, forecasting near gale-force winds, large waves, and flooding risks from Friday lunchtime. Galway City Council has closed coastal car parks and woodlands, with the museum shutting early. Power supplies and flights face significant threats as the storm tracks closer.

Emergency services are on high alert, mobilizing crews amid warnings of difficult traveling and potential further escalations.
