Large parts of the country are set to experience further intense downpours on Saturday night and into Sunday.

Although an Friday night ice alert has lapsed, status yellow rain warnings have been issued for 10 counties from midday on Saturday right through until Sunday afternoon, reports Breaking News.

Connacht along with Cavan, Donegal and Longford will be subject to the rainfall alert from 12pm on Saturday through to midnight on Sunday.

Met Éireann cautioned that rainfall will be heavy at intervals and could turn to sleet or snow, while strengthening winds may result in hazardous travel and reduced visibility, reports Breaking News.

Speaking on Newstalk, Met Éireann forecaster Mark Bowe said the unsettled weather is set to continue for now.

“We’re going to see the heaviest rain across Cork and Kerry and then we’re gonna see some travel disruption from the rainfalling as sleet and snow in Connacht and parts of Ulster as well,” he said, reports Breaking News.

“Now while those counties in the west are affected by the warnings, the rain will spread throughout the country and become widespread for a time, so we’re all going to get a good spalsh from this front as it passes over.”

In Dublin, river and canal levels are under observation after weeks of persistent rainfall caused flooding to homes and roads in parts of the capital, reports Breaking News.

Mayo County Council said that roads would be salted on Friday evening and again on Saturday morning, advising motorists to take care.

Dublin City Council said on Friday night it was closely tracking high surface water levels across the city, especially along the River Liffey near Chapelizod, reports Breaking News.

The local authority also confirmed it is liaising with Waterways Ireland regarding the Grand Canal, where water levels have risen.

It added that main routes would be gritted but warned that dangerous driving conditions and possible travel disruption could arise, reports Breaking News.
