Microsoft have officially confirmed that Skype, the pioneering Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) service, will cease operations on May 5, 2025. This closure marks the end of a 22-year legacy that began in 2003 when Skype was first launched by founders Niklas Zennström, Janus Friis, and a team of Estonian developers. Acquired by Microsoft in 2011 for $8.5 billion, Skype’s shutdown reflects a strategic shift as Microsoft consolidates its communication offerings under Microsoft Teams. This report examines the reasons behind Skype’s closure, its historical significance, the transition plan for users, and the broader implications for the digital communication landscape.
Skype emerged in August 2003 as one of the first widely accessible platforms to offer free internet-based voice and video calls, revolutionizing personal and business communication. At its peak, it boasted millions of users worldwide, providing an affordable alternative to traditional telephony for international calls and fostering global connectivity. Microsoft’s acquisition in 2011 aimed to integrate Skype into its ecosystem, including Windows, Xbox, and Windows Phone platforms. However, despite periodic updates—like the introduction of Skype Clips, Copilot integration, and a revamped mobile experience in 2024—Skype struggled to maintain relevance amid rising competition from modern communication tools such as Zoom, WhatsApp, Discord, and Microsoft’s own Teams.
In 2017, Microsoft launched Teams, a collaboration platform built on Skype’s technological foundation but tailored for enterprise use. Teams quickly gained traction, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, while Skype’s user base dwindled. By March 2020, Skype reported 40 million daily active users, but this figure declined to 36 million by late 2024, underscoring its fading prominence. The decision to retire Skype follows the earlier discontinuation of related services, such as Skype for Business in 2021 and Skype Numbers in December 2024, signalling a phased withdrawal.
