BREAKING: Minister for Health told mandatory hotel quarantine for EU citizens may be illegal under EU law – potential major blow for government

Health Secretary Stephen Donnelly’s plan to increase the number of countries on the state’s quarantine hotel list is under threat tonight due to serious legal problems.

The Indepedent reports that the Attorney General Paul Gallagher has told Donnelly that it may be illegal to charge EU citizens for staying in mandatory quarantine hotels while staying in Ireland.

According to the Independent, a number of government sources said Gallagher raised a number of legal issues with the proposal to add more countries, as well as highlighting serious difficulties in framing Irish nationals traveling from EU countries for two weeks in a hotel detention.

It means that the government’s plans for mandatory quarantining for the likes of France and Italy may be illegal under EU law and that once again Micheal Martin, Leo Varadkar, Eamon Ryan and Stephen Donnelly have made a complete bags of Ireland’s pandemic battle.
