The Mayor of New York City has declared a state of emergency in response to the spread of the Coronavirus.
In a statement made Thursday, mayor Bill de Blasio confirmed that he has signed an executive order which has gained support from the Governor of New York.
Under the order all public tourist attractions will remain closed and gatherings of 500 more people will be banned.
It is understood the order was signed after experts assessing the impact of the virus on the city, say that there could be more than 1,000 people infected within a matter of days.
The order will reportedly allow the mayor to close public transport, impose restrictions on building capacity and restrict movement around the city.
Although a restriction has only been put in place on public gatherings, it is believed that further restrictions could be imposed in the near future.
According to latest figures there are currently 95 COVID-19 cases in the city.
