Authorities in New Zealand had feared that a real threat of tsunami could hit the mainland after a magnitude 7 earthquake struck in the Kermadec Islands region in the Pacific Ocean, Civil Defence says.
An initial alert was issued of a tsunami warning at 11.37am Sunday NZ time, following the quake that happened just after 11am.
Thankfully, authorities believe that no tsunami will hit the mainland with MCDEM releasing the following:
“Based on current information, the initial assessment is that the earthquake is unlikely to have caused a tsunami that will affect New Zealand”.
