Taoiseach says he is happy and willing to offer an official state apology to the women and families affected by the CervicalCheck scandal

The Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has said that he is more than willing to offer an official state apology to the women and families affected by the CervicalCheck scandal.

Varadkar who was speaking to RTÉ Radio One’s Marian Finucane Show, said he is happy to issue an apology on behalf of the state.

The Taoiseach’s comments come after the 221 Plus Campaign recently stated that no one from the Government had officially ever apologised to them over the scandal.

Although Varadkar said he has made numerous apologies himself over the scandal, he did admit that he thought an official apology had been given.

The Taoiseach who told host Brendan O’Connor that he and the Health Minister Simon Harris are working to address the issues raised by the Scally Inquiry, also stated that he would issue an apology on behalf of the state in any format the campaign would request.

Varadkar said that he is more than willing to offer an official state apology in the Dáil or by any other means the 221 Plus Campaign deem appropriate.

He added that he and the Government are committed to offering women and families affected by the scandal better supports as well as implementing an improved screening system that will help women across the country in the immediate future.
